Shop the attacker!

There is no family in this county that has not been taken aback at the brazenness of the person or persons who are carrying out the attacks on women in the Athlone area at the moment.

Farewell to the west, we’re off to Leinster

Welcome to the world of the quick fix. Something bugging you? Have you done wrong in your past? Well, fret no more because this is the week that the world is turning the clock back and crushing any skeletons you may have in your cupboards. Are you a bank executive? Have you frittered away millions and still expect to get paid a sweet bonus? Do not worry, we can wipe all that away from you. Are you a hurling team which hasn’t won a title in 20 years? Not a problem either folks. Just sign on the dotted line here and we can whisk you away to another province. Welcome to the era of the quick fix where if you don’t like it, you can get it fixed. With the internet buzzing with spam emails offering boob enhancements for women and endowments for men that would make an elephant blush in the shower room, this is the era of want it, must have it. Now. Even Halloween has been shafted this year and with the Budget on in two weeks, we can go straight to Christmas. Yes, it’s a choice of freedom or crucifixion, to quote the Life of Brian. And this in the era when the birds are falling out of the hedge funds with the hunger and the world has gone mad with the PDs close to death and Galway United simultaneously one game from Europe and one game from the First Division.

Get off that couch, your locality needs you

Now that the September meeting of the Galway Races is upon us this weekend, sure we may as well be dusting down the Christmas trees, the winter is heading in so fast. And when we’re done bitching about the weather, let us take a step back and see is there any way that we can make a major contribution this winter to making Galway a better place for a lot of vulnerable people.

gardening with Anne McKeon

I know that many of you dread this time of year, raking lawns and rockeries, clearing pipes, and sweeping driveways, all in an effort to remove the falling leaves that have lodged there. Falling leaves are, as you know, all part of life’s cycle though. Plants, as with people, slow down at this time of year and shed excess baggage. This is all in preparation for winter, when it is the time to rest. Sound familiar?

St Brigid’s facilities an eye opener for us all

As Roy Keane famously said: “The only thing that drifts along are dead fish.” And having seen St Brigid’s GAA club’s fantastic facilities last weekend it was obvious to most of us that some clubs in this neck of the woods have been drifting along for the past few decades from an infrastructural point of view.

Whatever happened to Barry’s tea? And other food conundrums

image preview

Barry’s tea still has that kick-awake taste in the morning when you take the first gulp; but tea in general has changed, and changed dramatically. Just look at the choice of teas next time you reach for a packet. Where once there was only Lyons, Barry’s and PG Tips, now there has to be a choice of at least 50 different blends including herbal, organic, loose or bagged, or the plain ordinary black. And I was surprised to learn that there are at lest two tea blenders in Galway; including Solaris Botanicals, which not only won last month’s Junior Chamber of Ireland Entrepreneur of the Year, but in the same week clinched a deal to supply Harrods of London.

Corofin have what it takes to collect Connacht title

It would be easy to believe that next Sunday will be a sure thing for Corofin. They are at home, they have won the Connacht championship before in 1991, 1995, and 1997, and they showed some good form against Castlerea the last day out.

TG4 coverage keeps the diehards ticking over during the winter

It is impossible not to be a major fan of the terrific coverage that TG4 are providing and have provided over the past few years of Gaelic games at club level every Sunday during the winter and spring periods. And their highlights package on Monday evening at 8pm is in the not-to-be-missed category for any genuine dyed-in-the wool GAA enthusiast.

Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf?

They say that the concept of Christmas lights emanated from the location of the season in the darkest time of the year. When the days are the shortest, when even the light from the stars is covered by the dark clouds, creating a big dark curtain over the world and allowing our weary eyes respite from the bright summer sun.
